Rebuilding Coventry

The Adrian Mole books by Sue Townsend are among my very favorite books. They are utterly hilarious. I also loved The Queen and I. So I was expecting to like this book since I find Ms. Townsend's writing very funny. It was about a housewife, Coventry, who accidently killed her neighbor and her life on the run in London. It was a short book but I almost gave up on it. When I was about to give up on it, I skipped ahead a little and read some and that kept me interested in the book. It was more weird than funny to me. The last 20 or so pages did go fast and I wanted to see what happened. A strange little book.

The Wide Window

The third book in the Lemony Snicket series. I had read the first two and then seen the movie. I didn't realize the third book was covered in the movie so I knew the plot of this book. It was almost exactly like that part in the movie though. I was a little disappointed since I knew what already happened but I still liked it.

The Black Unicorn

This is the second book in the Landover series. Ben has been the king of Landover for a year but runs into some trouble. Some parts I couldn't wait to read more, others not so much. I don't think I have a preference for which book I like more. I have the other 2 books of the series which I will get to sometime soon.

Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

It's still very early in the year but I think this one will be one of my favorite books of the year. Lily and Snow Flower form a special relationship through nu shu, women's secret writing, in early 19th century China. It is fascinatinating to learn about women's life during this time period especially about foot binding, getting married and other women's areas of life. I didn't really like what happened in the last part of the book, but I see how it came about.

In God We Trust, All Other Pay Cash

I love A Christmas Story so once I heard about that it was based on this book; I had to get it. This has been sitting on my shelf for a few years and I decided to pick it up this year around Christmas time (actually didn't finish it until January) The movie is pretty accurate to the stories in the book. I love the nostalgic feel of the book. However, I did get bored at parts. Each chapter is a different childhood memory and some were more interesting than others. Overall though I enjoyed it.
